The original immigrant of this family in America was Richard Prouty who lived in Scituate, Plymouth Colony. One source states he was fourteen years of age when he arrived. He was there in 1670 and the first mention of his name in the records of the colony occurs in 1676. In 1676 he married Damaris Torrey, born in 1651. He was a militia man who served as a sergeant during the King Philip's War. He died in 1708. He had six children; five sons and one daughter.
This book examines the origin of the name and family in England, as well as the descendants of Richard and Damaris Prouty in New England.
