Richard¹ Pettingell was born in England about the year 1620.  He was a resident of Salem, Mass. before the year 1641 as he was admitted freemanship on 2 June 1641.  He removed to Newbury where he purchased a tract of land on 8 April 1651.  He married sometime before 1644 Joanna, daughter of Richard Ingersoll of Salem.   

Richard and Joanna recorded the births of six children: Samuel, Matthew, Mary, Nathaniel and Henry. An unnamed son was born and died the same day.  

Joanna died about the year 1692; Richard died in about the year 1695. 

The descendants of their five children are discussed in detail in this book.
