The origin and history of the name are discussed in a section of the book titled "Pre-American History". Also, there is a rather lengthy section that recounts the early settlement of Maine and the town of Kittery.
The main focus of the book, however, is on Captain William Leighton who was born in about 1625, and immigrated to New England - Kittery, Maine to be more exact, in 1650. In 1656 he married Katherine Frost and together they had four children, two sons and two daughters. One of the sons died early and it is his brother whose descendants are recounted in this book.
Collateral lines with mentions are: Frost, Hill, Bane, Wentworth, Langdon, Bragdon, Parsons, Pepperrell, Fernald, Nason, and others of York County and its vicinity.
In addition to the genealogy of William Leighton, the following individuals are treated with memoirs of varying length and detail:
Major Charles Frost of York County, Maine. Capt. John Hill of York County, Maine William Pepperrell and his descendants
