James Irving, a younger son of John Irving of Woodhouse (died 1669), who went into the world to seek his fortune, first to Russia, then Bermuda, afterwards to South Carolina, and finally to Jamaica, where he lived for many years.
James Irving, the elder, married at Charleston, South Carolina, Elizabeth Motte, daughter of Jacob Motte. They had four children, all born in Charleston: Elizabeth, James (the younger), William, and Amelia.
