The little order book from which these abstracts were made is the only one known to be in existance for Isle of Wight County before 1746. The spelling has been modernized in most instances although names are copied exactly as they appear. Most words which were abbreviated are spelled out in full. In order to save space some conventional phrases have been omitted. When an award was made in tobacco it was often stated that the tobacco was to be "in casq:" . When a plaintiff was granted an order against the sheriff for a certain amount of tobacco because of the non-appearance of the defendant "tho' returned arrested" it is usually stated that the sheriff "hath order for attachment in course."

The names of hundreds of the earliest residents of this ancient county are contained in this book. The names of the Justices are stated at the beginning of the minutes of each Court session. The names of petitioners, defendants, plaintiffs, Sheriffs, witnesses, and jurors are given with an explanation for their appearance.
