The GLASSELL, or GLASSELE family is said to be of French descent. It is claimed that the first of the name went from Poitiers, France, to Scotland with Mary, Queen of Scots, on her return to her native land in 1550. The name is supposed to have been originally "Glassele."
4. ANDREW3 GLASSELL (Robert2, John1). b. Galloway, Scotland, Oct. 8, 1738; d. Va., July 4, 1827; m. Oct. 21, 1776. ELIZABETH TAYLOR, b. Sept. 22, 1755 ; d. July 24, 1828, dau. of Erasmus and Jane (Moore) Taylor, of Orange county, Va. Erasmus Taylor was son of James and Martha (Thompson) Taylor, of Culpeper county, Va., and brother of Zachary Taylor, who was the grandfather of General Zachary Taylor, 12th President of the United States; and thus the gr.-grandfather of Sarah Knox Taylor, who m. the Hon. Jefferson Davis, the distinguished ex-President of the Confederate States of America. (TAYLOR 62.) Andrew Glassell emigrated to Madison county, Va. 1756.
Andrew GLASSELL and his wife, Elizabeth, had nine children: Mildred, John, Mary Kelton, Helen Buchan, Jane Moore, James McMillan, Andrew, Jr., Robert Alexander, and William Erasmus. The descendants of seven of these children are recorded in detail in this book.
