The author first discusses the origin of the name and various individuals with the name in the history of England; i.e., Gilbert de Gaunt came with William the Conqueror in 1060. In 1115, Gilbert, of Saxon origin, was a citizen of London, joined in the Crusades and was the father of Thomas Becket.
