John Dwight was born in England and came to the New World seeking freedom from religious persecution.  He arrived in late 1634 or early 1635.  The first mention of his name in the records is in the minutes of the first meeting of twelve settlers to establish the town of Dedham in the Massachusetts Colony on September 1, 1635.  Nineteen grants of land were made and John Dwight was among them.

His first wife Hannah, by whom he had all his children, died in 1656, and he married second Mrs. Elizabeth Ripley.  John Dwight had five children.  He died in Dedham in 1660.
