This volume contains detailed abstracts of all documents in Cumberland County Deed Book 1, including some documents that are older than the county itself (for example, deed book page 435 has a release that was written in 1745), and which you would expect to find in a Goochland County deed book. (It isn't in Goochland Deed Book 4). Cumberland county, during this time period, to judge from the deeds in this volume, experience a a great deal of migration from a surprisingly large number of counties, including coastal counties. Dates in this deed book seem to utilize the Julian Calendar (as opposed to the Gregorian Calendar, in use since 1752), to judge by the chronological order of the deeds, and by the fact that some deeds, if the modern calendar were used, would have been recorded before written. In the Julian system, New Year's Day occurs on March 25. In some cases, where double dating (i.e. the Julian year/the Gregorian year) was used in the deed book, those double dates have been retained in this volume.
