   This book, written by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter of Maplewood, N.J., was first published in print form in 1901. The introduction to this book states:  "There were three distinct families bearing the name of Carpenter who made early settlement in America. They each were from England, and by way of distinction have been termed The Providence Family, The Rehoboth Family, and the Philadelphia Family."
   
Book #1 concerns the Providence, R.I. Carpenters, starting with the immigrants William Carpenter and his wife, Elizabeth Arnold.

Book #2: "A Brief Genealogy of Some of the Descendants of William Carpenter, of Weymouth and Rehoboth, Mass., William Carpenter of Providence, R.I., and Ephraim, Timothy, and Josias Carpenter of Long Island", by James Usher of New York City (1898).

    This booklet enumerates the descendants of William Carpenter who settled in Weymouth, Mass., after arriving from England aboard the Bevis in 1638.  Seven children were named in his will, and it is these individuals whose descendants are listed in this book.

     This book is a rather complete accounting of the descendants of Samuel Carpenter of the Pennsylvania Colony.  He married Hannah Hardiman and together they had seven children.  Samuel died in 1714.  It is the descendants of his children that are detailed in this book.

     A biography of Seymour David Carpenter, born 1826, married 1st Sarah Weare and 2nd Fannie M. Emmerson.  He was in the fifth generation removed from the earliest known member of the family, Heinrich Zimmerman, anglicized to Henry Carpenter.  Henry was born (1673) and married in Switzerland Salome Rufener.  The immigrant to the U. S. was in the second generation, Emanuel Carpenter who settled and operated a tavern in Lancaster, Penn.
