The name is thought to be of French derivation. Tradition says he and three school friends in about 1680 sailed to New England as stowaways on a ship bound for the New World. It is not known for sure where he first lived, but a family with whom he was acquainted in England settled in Barrington, which adjoined Rehoboth and his first wife was a daughter in that family.
He lived in Barrington for about twenty years raising a large family of six sons and six daughters. Eventually he moved the entire family to Attleborough where better quality farm land was plentiful. There he died August 20, 1752, age about 92 years.
