Sources of information for this history included the Municipal Records of the town clerks, Registry of Births and Deaths, Records and Archives of the Commonwealth, records of the judicial courts, and of several counties, towns, cities, churches, and libraries that pertained to Cambridge.

Church records consulted included records of baptisms, deaths, and marriages.  In addition, court probate records were used, as well as tombstone inscriptions found in various burying-grounds, funeral sermons, and newspaper obituaries and news articles.

The information in the Genealogical Register is chiefly confined to the earliest families that resided in Cambridge prior to 1700.  The descendants of these families are traced down to the period of the book's publication in March, 1877.
